Overview:

WHAT IS THE ALZHEIMER'S RISK TEST?

The Alzheimer’s Risk Test is a non-invasive genetic risk assessment test, offered in the US which is performed using a simple saliva sample. The test gives predictive information of the genetic risk of an individual’s cognitive decline due to Alzheimer’s Disease. The test uses a technique known as a Polygenic Risk Score (PRS), and evaluates over 100k single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with Alzheimer’s disease. The test also reports the possible presence of genetic variants associated with the Early Onset form of Alzheimer’s disease (EOAD) and report APOE status.

WHEN WOULD YOU RECOMMEND OFFERING THE ALZHEIMER’S RISK TEST?

The Alzheimer’s Risk Test is for use in individuals with cognitive concerns, who would like greater insight into their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. These individuals may be experiencing cognitive issues, or have a family history of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s simplicity of use makes The Alzheimer’s Risk Test ideal as an initial test, prior to more invasive and expensive tests.

WHAT DO YOU USE THE THE ALZHEIMER’S RISK TEST FOR?

A high PRS score can be used to discuss with patients potential actions that might delay cognitive decline and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. A low PRS score can reassure patients and allow other diagnoses to be pursued. The Alzheimer’s Risk Test can also be used to stratify candidates most suitable clinical studies of new Alzheimer’s drugs.

HOW DO I EXPLAIN THIS TO MY PATIENT? DOES HIGH RISK MEAN THEY WILL DEVELOP ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE?

The Alzheimer’s Risk Test provides a risk assessment based on a large number of genetic markers, however, a high-risk score does not categorically mean that you will develop Alzheimer’s Disease. Conversely, a low-risk score does not rule out disease development. Factors such as lifestyle and other medical conditions can impact the likelihood of future development. However, knowledge of an individual’s risk can provide a positive input to discussion and actions about future management of key lifestyle decisions and future life planning.

WHAT IS A POLYGENIC RISK SCORE?

A Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) is a number that summarises the estimated effect of a large number of genetic variants on an individual's phenotype, typically calculated as a weighted sum of alleles associated with the disease.

HOW DOES THIS DIFFER FROM APOE GENETIC TESTING?

Most commercially available genetic tests relating to Alzheimer’s disease report on the single gene, APOE. Whilst this does give an indication of risk, it is not the whole story for Alzheimer’s disease genetics, as clearly demonstrated by a large proportion (40%) of the Alzheimer’s disease population carrying 2 copies of the APOE3 allele, generally considered not to impart additional risk for Alzheimer’s disease on those individuals.

DO I NEED TO BE A GENETICS EXPERT?

No. While The Alzheimer’s Risk Test is based on genetics, detailed knowledge of the genetics behind Alzheimer’s disease is not required. The results from the test are presented in a report that is designed to give detailed information, collated into an easy to read format for discussion with your patient. We will include an interpretation guide of the report as part of our set-up training for using the test.
