Patient Preparation:

The patient should remain seated and not smoke throughout the test. Patient needs to have fasted 12 hours prior to test.

Collection Instructions:

Submit 2 ml serum for fasting and each time interval. Separate serum from cells within 45 minutes of venipuncture. LABEL EACH TUBE WITH PATIENT'S NAME, DATE, AND TIME INTERVAL. Submit simultaneously from the same patient on one test request form. Reference intervals for timed insulin are based on a study of 74 normal subjects (24 males /47 females) ages 19-71 years. Each was given an oral dose of 75g of glucose prior to timed sampling[1]. This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high doseof biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). It is recommended to ask all patients who may be indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.

Red top tube or gel-barrier tube.

If a red-top tube is used, transfer separated serum to a plastic transport tube. Separate serum from cells within 45 minutes of collection. Avoid hemolysis.
