Overview:

Troponins are structural proteins of cardiac myocytes that are released into circulation after cardiac myocyte cell damage providing earlier identification of myocardial injury.

  • High Risk Troponin T may indicate a recent acute myocardial infarction (AMI). After ruling out AMI, elevated values may indicate a seven fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality over a 3-10 year period.
  • NT-proBNP and CRP in combination with Troponin T:
    • Elevated values of Troponin T, NT-proBNP and CRP may indicate over a 10-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and 12-fold risk of stroke mortality over a 10 year period.
  • High doses of biotin (> 5 mg/day) may interfere with assay results. Patient assumed to be refraining from biotin supplementation for at least 3 days prior to blood draw.

Methodology - Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay (ECLIA)
