Overview:
Aid in the diagnosis of viral respiratory disease.
Detection of respiratory viruses will vary greatly depending upon the specimen quality and subsequent handling. A negative result does not exclude the possibility of viral infection. Results of the test should be interpreted in conjunction with information available from epidemiological studies, clinical evaluation of the patient, and other diagnostic procedures. Culture should be considered to confirm negative results of this test in a symptomatic patient. The viral antigens detected in some direct specimens may be from nonviable virus. This is particularly true for RSV, which is known for its instability and loss of viability.
Collection Instructions:
Viral, Chlamydia, or Mycoplasma culture transport (provided by LabCorp), or other appropriate transport medium; sterile screw-cap tube or container for nasal washings or bronchoalveolar lavage.
